How to Reduce Data Usage on Windows

How to Reduce Data Usage on Windows

Hello there, Some of us may use limited data connection. I am using unlimited data connection now but nearly a year back I used to use limited data pack from SkyPro Evdo Modem. And I always tried to reduce data usage on my computer. I used to use different tricks to restrict background data on windows.
Actually, there is no such preloaded function to restrict background data usage on Windows like android's preloaded background data restriction function. We have to stop all software, functions that use our data in background. So the process to reduce data usage on windows might be long and boring but you have to follow these methods because there is no shortcut methods.
Follow the following steps to reduce data usage on windows,
1. Turn Off Windows Update:
For security purpose windows automatically update it. This may consume your most of data, you can easily disable it. Go to,  Control Panel -> System and Security ->Windows Update and choose Never Check For Updates (Not Recommended) and done!
Remember: Disabling Windows update may put in risk, Windows update themselves  to protect you from different attacks, Its better to be keep updated with Windows.
2. Turn Live Tiles Off :

Windows has some preloaded softwares that consume your few data, To turn this off, Go to Start Menu and Right Click on each icons and click on turn live tiles off. You don't have to do these if you have windows xp, windows 7. But must do in Windows 8+ versions.
2. Disable Software's auto update:
You may have different softwares installed on your computer, such as Google chrome, Mozila Firefox, Adobe flash player, Adobe reader, Antiviruses etc some of them update them automatically, They have different options to turn off automatic update, Lets discuss about few,
Mozila Firefox: Perhaps most of the computers in this world have Firefox, to disable auto update go to Mozilla Firefox -> Options -> Advanced -> Update and choose Never Check for Updates and hit Ok button. Done!
Google Chrome: Another most popular browser by Google, To turn off automatic update of Google Chrome go to MY Computer -> Manage -> Services and Applications -> Services -> Disable the Google Update Services and restart the computer to apply changes. Done!
Antivirus: Antivirus is most essential software for our computer, almost all if not all antivirus update them automatically to protect you from latest cyber threads. As I mentioned above different antivirus have different process to disable automatic update. Additionally antivirus have function to send suspicious files to them, you must turn it off, It sends your files to them if antivirus found it suspicious.
3. Disable BITS:
Disable BITS to reduce Data Usage

Perhaps you heard this word first time. right? BITS means Background Intelligent Transfer Services, its Windows preloaded function and it consumes our little data, I don't know why? :P But I know how to stop BITS to consuming our data.
Open Task Manager -> Services -> Open Services -> Background Intelligent Transfer Service, Select it and hit Stop icon. Now right click on it and select Properties -> General -> Startup Type and switch it to Disabled.  Now Done!  Remember BITS(This Service ) will be enabled when you Restart or Shut Down your Computer/Laptop. I have not found any way to disable it permanently, perhaps Windows doesn't allow us to do this.
4. Scan For Virus:  Sometime Viruses consume our data in backgrounds. Some virus just hang our computer by making  shortcuts or unnecessary files but some sends data stored on our computer to hackers, this may cause private data leak as well as consumption of internet data. So its better to remove these viruses using good antivirus.
5. Check Which Software is Sucking your Data :
If you are following all steps mentioned above and still windows is using  your data more then expected then you can view which app is consuming your data, to view this go to Task Manager ( press CTRL+Alt+ESC or Right Click On Taskbar and Select Task Manager) -> Performance Tab-> Open Resource Monitor -> Network Tab -> Network Activity
If you found any app that is using your most of data then uninstall it or restrict data from windows firewall. Note you can check which software is sucking your data when you are connected in internet.
These methods won't restrict your background data completely on Windows like in Android but it will reduce your almost all background data.
